Some things in the Inland Empire are changing! We will be having our regional at UCR. We will give you more information with details over the next month and a half.

I have included an updated schedule—but the room numbers will have to be adjusted to what is at UCR. We hope to maintain the same type schedule—but there may be adjustments. If there are many changes we will update you in February. Be flexible. In this document you can see the team numbers have been assigned. We may lose or gain teams over the next 6 weeks—but we will maintain the same numbers you see listed. We may just have to skip numbers of add some in the second group. Again—we have to be flexible.

This is a great opportunity for us at UCR. We will have further room for growth, and possibly we can have more rooms to use so students will not be on top of each other.

We will get more information to you later—possibly before the end of the month. I hope all are doing well in the second semester or finishing the first semester in good shape. Enjoy our dry weather for the time being. If your team hasn’t been working very hard, I hope this will help get them started. ---John Gifford

Rules and Updates

A Note on Rules and Clarifications

The National Science Olympiad website regularly posts rules clarifications. You can check by clicking on the event links on this page or going to the NSO Rules Clarification page. The information available through links on this page and others is for information only and may not necessarily comply with the current rules. In case of conflict, the current Coaches Manual and Rule Book takes precedence.

Rule interpretations and updates that are general and issued by the National Science Olympiad can be found at the NSO website.

Using Notes, Calculators, or Other Resources in Events (Division A, B, C)

It is generally understood that, if notes, resources, calculators, actions etc., are not excluded, they are permitted unless they violate the spirit of the problem. No direct or electronic communication is permitted with external resources (including people, places, etc.) during the competition. (National Science Olympiad)

Coaches Info
  • On-Site Check-in
On-site check-in will take place on the main quad between Bourns College of Engineering and Unilersity Lecture Hall. In order to help you find the area, there will be our Volunteers to guide you from Lot 13 to where the registration tables will be set up. Check-in will be open by 7:30 am. Please have your release forms and roster of students ready to turn in. When you check-in you will receive the wristbands for your students. We assume that all students have photo release forms in your packet. If some students do not, then you will need to trade the green wristbands for yellow when you check in.
  • Buses
Buses should drop off the students and park at Lot 26 (Between Canyon Crest and Blaine)
  • Requests for Students with Special Needs
Please contact us as soon as possible if someone will need help with getting on and off of campus.
  • Awards Ceremony
    More information to follow.
  • Campus Tour
We will be providing you a Campus Tour. Interested students, teachers, and parents are invited to RSVP for the Tours or let us know at the Registration Table.
  • Phone Number for Coaches to Use
This year, you will be able to email us at gradprep@ucr.edu if there are any problems with the events. Our goal is that if you have concerns about the way an event is being conducted, you can reach us immediately so that if things need to be changed, it can be done before it is too late (ie. Event Supervisor missing, etc). However, this is NOT to replace the current appeal system which is consistent with the one at State and National tournament. As with the appeal system, only Registered Coaches should be calling this number—no parents or students. Please use discretion when using this number and only use this number on the day of the tournament.
  • Food Service on Campus
Food, beverage, and snack service will be available at several campus locations:

Of course, you may also bring sack lunches and your own drinks. A significant amount of trash is generated at the Science Olympiad.

Stoves of any kind are prohibited. Please do not plan to cook food on campus for your team members. Teams are welcome to bring ice chests, etc. and set-up a "home base" for their students.

  • Parking
Parking will be in Lot 13 on campus and on residential streets in the community. Campus parking officers will direct parking, filling spaces in Lot 13 in succession. Please be patient and considerate and follow all directions. Parking in reserved areas is prohibited and will be enforced.
  • Volunteer Assignments
Volunteer assignments will be made in advance and posted on the website. Volunteer assignment verification sheet(s) will be included in your materials when you register. This year, these verification slips will be turned-in by the event supervisor with the score sheets. Thank you for arranging to complete your volunteer assignments—the assistance of the volunteers is essential to our success.
  • Event Drop Off
Event devices for Mission Possible C and Sounds of Music C can be dropped off at Bourns College of Engineering (Aberdeen and North Campus Drive).
  • Logistics and Event Updates
We are very excited to present the 2011 Inland Empire Regional Science Olympiad. This event represents a great deal of work, expense, and commitment on the part of many people. The efforts of those leading the organization of the Science Olympiad occurs in addition to their regular professional assignments and takes place after work hours. The grounds and buildings are venerable and beautiful. Please make sure your students conduct themselves respectfully. Take care to be sure any area where your team spends time is left clean and in every way as you found it. Bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, etc. are not permitted.
  • Science Olympiad Code of Ethics

Student participants are expected to compete in tournament events with honest effort to follow the rules and the spirit of the competition. Team members are expected to be the builders of all the devices used in the events. The goal of competition is to give one's best effort while displaying honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship. Students, coaches, parents, and guests are expected to display courtesy and respect toward Olympiad officials, other teams, and guests of the Olympiad. Failure to show honesty and/or courtesy by a participant, coach, or guest of the team may result in the disqualification of the team from that event, the entire tournament or future tournaments.

  • Science Olympiad Pledge for Coaches

On behalf of the coaches and assistants at this tournament, I pledge to encourage honesty and respect for tournament personnel, our fellow coaches, and other team members. We want our efforts to bring honor to our community and school.

  • Science Olympiad Pledge for Student
I pledge to put forth my best effort in the Science Olympiad tournament and to uphold the principles of honest competition. In my events, I will compete with integrity, respect, and sportsmanship towards my fellow competitors. I will display courtesy towards Event Supervisors and Tournament Personnel. My actions will exemplify the proud spirit of my school, team, and state.
Parents Info
  • Photographing or Videotaping Other Teams

Taking photographs of other teams and their devices is not allowed. School representatives, including parents, may videotape and take photos of their own students as they compete and pose for photos after a competition is allowed.

In some cases, a school may allow another team to take photos of the equipment/devices they have constructed, but this must always be done with the permission of the team being photographed. Taking photos or video without permission is bad etiquette and is not at the Science Olympiad. Teams that violate this common sense courtesy may be sanctioned.

Official photographers and/or videographers may be on site to document the Science Olympiad for various of media purposes. These individuals are permitted to take photos and video in general and will obtain permission before recording devices from design events.

We are mindful that a school may want to photograph or videotape their own students and therefore have not banned cameras in the open events. This decision reflects long-standing trust and appreciation for the courtesy of participating teams. Please discuss this with your team members, parents, and volunteers. Make sure that this policy is clearly understood.

  • Food Service on Campus

Food, beverage, and snack service will be available at several campus locations:

Of course, you may also bring sack lunches and your own drinks. A significant amount of trash is generated at the Science Olympiad. It will be helpful if you bring trash bags and remove your own trash.

Stoves of any kind are prohibited. Please do not plan to cook food on campus for your team members. Teams are welcome to bring ice chests, etc. and set-up a "home base" for their students. There is little shade in the plaza above the parking lot where most teams will set up their spot, so shade covers may be advised if you have access to one.

  • Science Olympiad Pledge for Parents

On behalf of the parents and spectators I pledge to be an example for our children by: respecting the rules of Science Olympiad, encouraging excellence in preparation and investigation, supporting independence in design and production of all competition devices, and respecting the decisions of event supervisors and judges. My examples will promote the spirit of cooperation within and among all our participating team

  • Code of Ethics

Student participants are expected to compete in tournament events with honest effort to follow the rules and the spirit of the competition. Team members are expected to be the builders of all the devices used in the events. The goal of competition is to give one's best effort while displaying honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship. Students, coaches, parents, and guests are expected to display courtesy and respect toward Olympiad officials, other teams, and guests of the Olympiad. Failure to show honesty and/or courtesy by a participant, coach, or guest of the team may result in the disqualification of the team from that event, the entire tournament or future tournaments.

  • Parking for Cars

Parking Lot 13 has been allocated to park cars.

Parking Lot 26 has been allocated to park buses.

  • Be on Time to Events

It is very important that your students be on time to the events in which they are scheduled to participate. For example, if there is a rotation between tasks or stations and the rotation has started by the time your students arrive, they may not be able to complete all tasks or stations. There may be important instructions or safety instructions that are given at the opening of the event–if your students miss those instructions, the event supervisor cannot be satisfied that the event will be safe.

If your students arrive late, and the event has not started, they should not complain if they are barred from the event - it may look like it has not started, but important orientation may have already taken place. Long experience shows that the event captains want every student to be successful and have the chance to participate. The decision of the event captain with respect to late arriving students is final.
