Service-Learning: Through Earth Science Summer Field Study
This summer field study will include a one-day workshop in the classroom focusing on Service-Learning and background information in preparation for the field studies, two days of on site field studies, one day in the computer lab creating teaching tools using PowerPoint and one optional field study day. You will also receive a free kit of material to use in the classroom. Field Studies may vary as some road closures are being announced by Cal trans. Please see attached Agenda.

Day 1 Classroom Instruction: Location RCOE

· Field study background information on rocks and minerals, earthquake faults, tectonics, and California’s water resources
Day 2-Field Study
Topics
California content standards will be covered in the following:
· Rocks and Minerals
· Earthquake Faults and Earthquakes
Field Trip
Study of San Andreas Fault includes:
· Mormon Rock, Fault gouge, Sag ponds, Landslides, Erosion, Folding, Faults, Avenue S in Palmdale, Devil’s Punchbowl, Vasquez Rock (the site of 17 movies, 24 TV series, and five music video filmings), “Burminco” rock and mineral shop (time permitting)
Day 3- Field Study
Topics
Focus on water resources in the region
Field Trip
· Western Center for Archaeology and Paleontology includes: Tours and Speakers
· Diamond Valley Lake and other water resources, includes: Tours and Speaker
Day 4-Classroom
Topics
· Computer Lab-uploading digital photos
o Develop Power Points for:
§ Teaching Earth Science in the classroom
§ Family Science night (Earth Science theme)
§ Elementary school site teaching on Earth Science lessons
Day 5 –Optional Field Study
· Arrowhead Tunnel- go two miles into the tunnel and see the drilling machine
